Top Tips for Making the Most Out of Your Cabin Luggage

Lewis Taxis • 23 March 2023

If you’re going on holiday soon, then it’s likely that you’ll be taking carry-on luggage as opposed to hold luggage, especially if you’re not going far or are only going away for a short trip. Frankly, we think it’s a sensible thing to do - no need to wait around for your bag once your flight has landed and risk it being lost, nor the need to pay extortionate baggage prices!

On top of that, when you book a taxi to take you to the airport, many taxis charge extra for larger luggage (understandably so, since the weight will use up more of their fuel), so only taking cabin luggage will additionally save you money in this sense, along with being easier to transport and not requiring a larger vehicle!

But how do you fit a week’s worth of luggage into a carry-on suitcase? Here are our top tips on how to make the most out of the space available, so you don’t have to compromise on your outfit options (of course, you will need to remember to check that your bag still fits within the airline’s weight restrictions, regardless of how much you can pack in)!

Roll Your Clothes

One of the oldest packing tricks in the book: rolling your clothes. Rolling your clothes as opposed to folding them makes them much more compact, allowing you to slot more into your case, both in rows next to each other and on top of each other. Furthermore, this stops the clothes from creasing, since there are no crisp lines that can set into the fabric from being compressed in the case for a long time, as happens with folds.

Not only does this allow you to fit more clothes in, but it allows you to fit other items into your case (such as shoes, wash bags and electronic devices) more easily since the clothes can fit around these rather than being put unevenly on top or squashed underneath.

Packing Cubes

Packing cubes have become all the rage recently, especially with the traction they’ve gained on popular social media platforms, such as TikTok. We can see why, too, since they allow you to pack all your items into your case in an incredibly organised and efficient manner.

Packing cubes often come in different sizes, with larger cubes for heavier, larger and thicker clothes, then smaller cubes for lighter clothes, as well as toiletry bags, pouches and even shoe bags and laundry bags. Many come with a netting material on top and straps inside, so you can really fit in a generous amount of clothes compactly.

Fill Large Items with Small Items

Utilising all available space is essential when packing, as leaving no gaps means you can truly fit the maximum amount of items into your bag. This is why you should put smaller items into any larger items and spaces where possible; for example, put your socks inside your shoes, roll smaller items of clothing up within your larger items of clothing and put small items such as chargers or accessories into any additional bags you pack (e.g. clutches or handbags).
